The Fountains of George Tsutakawa

Hidden amongst Seattle's many public fountains are several treasures by a Seattle artist named George Tsutakawa, who gained international renown for his sculptural fountains. His life is a Seattle story: born to immigrant parents with a successful import/export company that was seized after the Pearl Harbor bombing, he was sent to Europe to fight for the country that had interned his parents and relatives. After the war, the family business gone, he obtained an MFA degree at the University of Washington on the GI Bill. He later became associated with the progressive Northwest School and is among the major, influential figures of modern Asian-American art.
